Judges Under Attack: California Judges Association Provides Opportunity for Public to Talk to Judges in Free Town Halls April 10 & 14

April 07, 2025 --

The California Judges Association (CJA)’s Judicial Fairness Coalition (JFC) will host the final two free public town halls in its first statewide Judges & Politics series on April 10 and April 14. The town halls feature a panel of judges who will answer questions, address attacks on judges and disinformation about the courts, and provide an overview of the judicial branch and the role of judges.

The town hall on April 10 will take place at 4:30 PM and will be hosted online, and the town hall on April 14 will begin at 5:15 PM and will be presented in collaboration with the McGeorge School of Law and offers both in-person and virtual options. Participants may submit questions when they register, or during the event. Registration for the April 10 town hall can be found here: https://bit.ly/JFCSFTownHall and registration for the April 14 town hall can be found here: https://bit.ly/JFCSacTownHall.

“The town halls give us an opportunity to restore confidence in the judicial branch, explain how and why the courts must remain fair and impartial, and better educate Californians on our role as judges,” said Judge Khymberli Apaloo, CJA President. “The national dialogue on the judiciary is leaving many questions unanswered, and it is imperative that we create greater transparency and provide more information on the third branch to the public.”

Panelists for the April 10 town hall include Justice Tracie Brown, California Court of Appeal, Judge Patrick Thompson, San Francisco Superior Court, and Judge Andy Wick (Ret.), Sonoma County Superior Court. It will be moderated by Oliver Dunlap, of Bartko Pavia. Panelists for the April 14 town hall include Judge Consuelo Maria Callahan, Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Justice Shama Mesiwala, California Court of Appeal, Third Appellate District, Judge Curtis Karnow, San Francisco County Superior Court, and Judge James Mize (ret.), Sacramento County Superior Court and will be moderated by Professor Mike Vitiello, Distinguished Professor of Law, McGeorge School of Law and Judge Barbara Kronlund, San Joaquin County Superior Court. The town halls are presented in collaboration with the California Lawyers Association and the California Lawyers Foundation.

Founded in 2018, the JFC was created to respond to unfair criticism and false and misleading information about judges and the judiciary and affirm the independence of the courts. The JFC is a statewide coalition of active and retired judges, bar association members, and law school deans and professors. In 2022, the JFC launched a public education and engagement campaign, aimed to demystify the third branch of government, abate unfair criticism of judges, and reinforce the importance of an impartial judiciary.
