Sports briefs: baseball, Swat lacrosse and DeLaet Cup

Team Canada finished fourth at the World Baseball Softball Confederation Junior Men’s Softball World Championship in Prince Albert. Canada finished with a perfect 5-0 record in pool play, and won their first playoff game, 6-4 over Argentina on Saturday. However the host Canadians lost 5-2 to New Zealand in a game to decide which team would go to the semifinals. Japan went on to defeat New Zealand 5-3 in the semifinal on Sunday but Australia emerged as world champions, winning the final by a 6-1 score over Japan.

The top Canadian batter in the tournament was Brendan Hagerman, who was 8 for 21 for a .381 average, scoring five runs with 3 RBIs. Canada were led on the mound by Owen Torrie and Riley Manion, who each had two wins.

Swat 1-1 in playoffs

The Saskatchewan Swat got the jump in their playoff series with the Calgary Mounties holding on for a tight 11-9 win at Kinsmen Arena in Saskatoon on Saturday night. The Mounties got their revenge on Sunday afternoon, evening the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League Junior A series at 1-1 with a 9-3 win in Saskatoon. The Swat and Mounties will head to Calgary next weekend for Games 3, 4 and 5 of their best-of-seven semifinal series. The Swat finished with a 13-3 regular season record while the Mounties were 10-6.

Team East wins second DeLaet Cup 

Team West closed the gap, but Team East won the DeLaet Cup in Saskatoon for the second year in a row on Sunday. Team East won the 12-person team event by a combined 14-10 score at the Willows Golf and Country Club, after winning last year’s event 16.5 to 7.5. The cup, hosted by PGA tour professional and Weyburn native Graham DeLaet, featured four U15 players and eight U19 players per team. Qualifiers were held in early June at various golf courses across Canada, including the Dakota Dunes Golf Links in Saskatoon. The DeLaet Cup is described on the Canadian Junior Golf Association website as the only national junior Ryder Cup style event in Canada.
