With all the subtlety of a Sam Bennett elbow, I am here to remind you that Sunday is Mother’s Day.
Now, in our house, a typical Sunday has been reserved weeks in advance with “projects,” and a tradition like Mother’s Day can be a moving target: The mom in my house is good as long as the weekend includes some kind of outing, something to get us out of our Netflix zone. (Have you seen the Tina Fey-Steve Carell remake of “The Four Seasons”? Definitely worth a binge.)
Here are some ways to celebrate with dinner, a drink or a Smiths tribute band, and allow you to keep your schedule open on Sunday. Which is when the Florida Panthers happen to be duking it out in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. (And it’s Mother’s Day!)
FRIDAY
Millennial tears: Acclaimed playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ 2023 off-Broadway hit “The Comeuppance” is making its Florida premiere at the Arsht Center in Miami with a run through May 25. Presented by Zoetic Stage and directed by Stuart Meltzer, the “profound tragicomedy” (New York Times) revolves around a disparate group of millennials at their 20th high school reunion. “The Comeuppance” will have performances this weekend at 7:30 p.m. Friday (sold out), 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday . Tickets start at $56+. Visit ArshtCenter.org.
There is a light: One of South Florida’s most effective tribute bands in capturing the attitude and romance of the original, Miami-based Ordinary Boys bring their popular homage to The Smiths and Morrissey to Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale on Friday. As usual, they’ll open for themselves as New Dawn Fades, a tribute to Joy Division and New Order. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets for the all-ages show start at $15+ at JoinTheRevolution.net.
Love hour: In downtown Delray Beach, Amar Mediterranean Kitchen & Bar recently debuted Habibi Hour, a daily happy hour named after the Arabic word for “my love.” From 4 to 6 p.m. you’ll find 50% off wine, beer and select cocktails as well as items from their hot and cold mezze menu. (On Wednesdays, Amar’s Habibi Wine Nights offer half-off all bottles from 4 p.m. to closing.) Visit AmarDelray.com.

Weekend laughs: Comedian, writer and former late-night TV host Craig Ferguson will spend the weekend at the former Dania Improv in Dania Beach — now, inexplicably, calling itself the Fort Lauderdale Improv Comedy Theatre — with performances set for 7 and 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The venue is offering a special Mother’s Day Weekend BOGO discount on select performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Find your performance and, before selecting your seat, click the UNLOCK button. Enter the code MOTHER and discounted seat prices will be displayed. Visit BrowardCenter.org.

Future music: Exciting news about the South Florida live music schedule came the other day when Stephin Merritt and The Magnetic Fields announced that they would extend their 2025 tour, which revisits their gloriously eclectic and influential 1999 double album “69 Love Songs,” with two stops, both cities in South Florida. Performances of the album’s three hours of music will flow over two nights each at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach on Oct. 29-30 (tickets start at $64+ for a two-night package), and Nov. 1-2 at the Arsht Center in Miami ($102+ for a two-night package).
