Andruw Jones, Jake Peavy, Gary Sheffield, CC Sabathia and Ryan Howard are among more than two dozen former MLB stars set to participate in the second East-West Classic and home run derby on June 19 at Rickwood Field in Birmingham.
The event, part of MLB’s Juneteenth celebration, begins with the home run derby at noon. The game, which will last five innings or two hours — whichever comes first, is set for 1:05 p.m.
The East-West Classic, which took place for the first time in 2024 at Rickwood, is an homage to annual Negro Leagues East-West All-Star Game. The East-West game was played at various sites (most often at Chicago’s Comiskey Park) from 1933-62.
MLB played a regular-season game for the first time ever at Rickwood in 2024, with the St. Louis Cardinals defeating the San Francisco Giants 6-5 before a crowd of more than 8,000. Former South Alabama star Brendan Donovan hit a two-run homer in the first inning to spark the Cardinals’ victory.
