Prep report: Spartans edge Wolverines in eighth inning

Thursday's prep report includes local softball, boys golf and girls lacrosse.

Superior baseball took advantage of an infield error to score the deciding run in a 2-1 win over Rock Ridge on Thursday, May 1 in Virginia.

The teams had been deadlocked at 1 since the fourth inning when Calvin Anderson and Hudson Helenius got themselves on base early in the eighth. Mike Fiegle’s grounder was mishandled to bring in the run.

Superior got into similar hot water in the bottom half of the inning after Rock Ridge led off with an error and a walk but Jayce Rue struck out two and got a grounder to end the threat.

Anderson went 3-for-4 and Helenius 2-for-4 for Superior.

Six Wolverines had one hit apiece.

Moose Lake/Willow River 12, Mesabi East 1

Hayden Danelski drove in four runs as the Rebels cruised on Thursday, May 1 in Aurora.

Danelski had a two-run single in the third inning, then added a pair of run-scoring fielder’s choices.

Layne Radzak went 3-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.

Reese Bode allowed one run on six hits and struck out seven for MLWR.

Duluth Marshall 19, Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin 0

Three Marshall pitchers combined on a five-inning no-hitter on Thursday at Wade Stadium.

Aaden Westerbur (two innings), Charlie Hayden (one) and Wyatt Zappa (two) limited the Raiders to five walks and struck out six combined.

Ten Hilltoppers had at least one hit; Mason Park was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Esko 18, Carlton/Wrenshall 0

Brody Lillo struck out 10 in just five innings in a five-inning, one-hit shutout in Esko on Thursday, May 1.

Jackson Peterson had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with seven RBIs including a two-run double and a three-run home run. Five other Esko players had two-hit games.

BOYS GOLF

Superior wins Northern Cup

Ryan Pettingill had birdies on the last three holes of his match to force a playoff Superior won over Northwestern on Thursday, May 1 at Botten’s Green Acres in Lake Nebagamon.

Pettingill, Leo Drougas and Nolan Patel got the win on the second sudden-death playoff hole after the teams tied 5.5 to 5.5.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Duluth Marshall 15, Superior 1

Sarah Stauber had four goals and an assist as the Hilltoppers cruised to victory on Thursday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior.

Ella Hron added three and Nine Thorson two. Both players have now scored 30 varsity goals in what is the program’s 21st varsity game all-time.

Anna Rains scored twice and assisted twice for Marshall, while Anna Hron made four saves.

SOFTBALL

Cloquet 6, Hermantown 4

Rylie Goranson’s two-run triple in the third inning allowed the Lumberjacks to play from ahead on Thursday, May 1 at Braun Park.

After the teams exchanged runs in the second inning and Goranson gave Cloquet the edge, she scored on a Josie Lindstrom single. Goranson, Lilly Witte and Aubrey Perrault had two hits apiece for Cloquet (10-1).

Hermantown got within a run twice but pitcher Allie Jones kept the Hawks at bay. She allowed four runs, scattering 10 hits and four walks but striking out nine.

Mikayla Sweeney was 3-for-4 for Hermantown.

Esko 12, Carlton/Wrenshall 0

Esko scored seven times in the first inning to put the game away early, combining four singles, two doubles and an error for the big output.

Four Esko players had two-hit games, while Keira Leach (three innings) and Aubery Grerard (two) combined on a one-hit shutout.

Proctor 18, South Ridge 2

Suri Langley had three hits, two of them doubles, and drove in four runs as Proctor cruised to victory on Thursday.

The Rails piled up 21 hits, including four players with three.

Malory Hart earned the win, allowing two runs on eight hits in five innings.

Rock Ridge 11, Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin 3

Taylor Morley handed off most of the pitching duties on Thursday but still made a big impact at the plate, where she was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs in the Wolverines’ big win at home.

She was one of five Wolverines players with at least two hits.

Morley mopped up with two shutout innings of relief but Ayla Lokken had the first five covered, allowing three unearned runs on six hits.
