Good Question: Why doesn’t UK wear blue at home?
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - For today’s Good Question, Jeff asks: Besides tradition, why doesn’t the men’s basketball team wear blue uniforms instead of white uniforms when playing at Rupp Arena?
It may be tradition, but it’s also an NCAA rule.

When it comes to the colors for teams, the NCAA basketball handbook says: “Opposing team uniforms shall be of contrasting colors. The home team shall wear light game jerseys and game shorts, and the away team shall wear dark game jerseys and game shorts. This rule may be altered by mutual consent of the competing institutions as long as the color of the jersey and shorts are still contrasting.”
So, an opposing team would have to give the OK before blue jerseys could be worn at Rupp.
It’s believed this color scheme started in baseball. Dark uniforms would be worn on the road because there might not be access to laundry facilities. The darker uniforms could hide dirt better.
