HS Roundup: Smith Vocational baseball erases late deficit, defeats South Hadley in extra innings to remain unbeaten (PHOTOS)

Another game, another win for the Smith Vocational baseball team on Friday afternoon in South Hadley, but the Vikings had to work extra for this one.
Smith Voc entered the seventh inning down by two runs, 8-6, and needed at least two runs to extend the game to the home half of the frame. The Vikings scored three to make it 9-8, but South Hadley responded with a run of its own to send the game to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Smith Voc left no doubt with four runs in the frame. Kaleb Jorritsma shut the door on the mound to secure the Vikings 13-9 victory, improving them to 8-0 this spring.
Pat Millin led the way with three hits and two walks for Smith Voc, scoring four times and driving in a run. Gavin Kukucka ripped three hits, Jared Baer had two hits, two runs and an RBI, Jorritsma and Corey Kirkendall recorded one hit and one RBI apiece while James Lavallee walked four times and registered an RBI in the win.
Millin struck out six on the mound for the Vikings in four innings, then Jorritsma relieved him in the fifth and went the rest of the way – surrendering only three hits in his four innings of work.
Jackson Keller and Lincoln Belsky smacked two hits apiece for South Hadley, with Keller driving in two runs and Belsky bringing home one. Justin Moskal and Noah Carillon both recorded RBI hits. Griffin Soderbaum pitched six innings to start the day, then Ryan Netkovick and Carillon came out of the bullpen to go the rest of the way.
Smith Voc led 5-0 early on, and 6-3 through four. South Hadley then put up five runs in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead, setting up the late-game drama. Both teams combined for 13 errors.
South Hadley (5-5) returns to action against Easthampton on Monday, while Smith Voc (8-0) hosts St. Mary’s on Tuesday.
West Springfield 20, Holyoke 5 — Jeremy Francisco and Aryan Sabathia recorded the only two Purple Knights hits of the day in a five-inning loss to the Terriers on Friday afternoon.

Belchertown 15, Amherst 1 (5) — Nine runs in the first inning were plenty for the Orioles on Friday afternoon, as they breezed past the ‘Canes in Amherst.
Ian McDonald had a monster three-hit, four-RBI day while Josh Misiaszek (two runs, two RBIs), Kamden Houle (two runs, two RBIs) and Jake Waller (RBI) all recorded two hits for Belchertown. Waller earned the win on the mound, striking out five in four innings.
St. Mary’s 9, Smith Academy 6 — Although one team did have to come out on top, neither the Saints or Falcons were losers on Friday afternoon, as both teams raised nearly $4,000 to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
Harry LaFlamme and Garret Willard each drove in two runs for Smith Academy and Jake Wilcox tallied a pair of hits.
McCann Tech 8, Hopkins 5 — The Golden Hawks held on to a 4-3 advantage through three, but the Hornets put up four runs in the fourth to take the lead for good on Friday afternoon in Hadley.
Carter Styspeck recorded two hits and scored twice, Matthew Vassallo drove in a pair with a double and Chace Earle tallied an RBI as well for Hopkins. Styspeck and Alex West combined for nine strikeouts in their split time on the bump.
Hampshire 6, Westfield 5 (8) — Due to Saturday’s impending weather, the Raiders and Bombers’ second matchup of the year got moved a day earlier to Friday, and Hampshire walked it off in the eighth inning to remain undefeated (10-0) in dramatic fashion.
CC Thayer blasted two home runs against Westfield ace Shea Hurley, and tallied five RBIs to lead the Raiders. Kalin Dubay doubled, singled and scored twice while Teagan Charles (one run), Chelsea Vanasse (one run), Lucy Trombley, Reagan Dubay and Ryanne Dubay each hit safely in the win.
Ryanne Dubay struck out eight and gave up five hits in eight innings pitched.
West Springfield 5, Holyoke 4 (8) — Lily Tapion smacked three hits to pace the Purple Knights, which rallied with a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings before ultimately dropping a 5-4 decision on Friday.
Alanna Bonilla homered for Holyoke, and Kylie Blaha added two hits on the afternoon.
Franklin Tech 4, Northampton 0 – The Blue Devils came up short in a pitchers’ duel as Greta Lepore (Northampton) and Hannah Gilbert (Tech) combined for 32 strikeouts. Lepore fanned 14, but was bested by Gilbert’s 18 Ks.
Tech scored all four of its runs in the top of the eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run RBI single from Kylee Gamache.
Talia Garretson went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead the Blue Devils.
Hopkins 13, Mahar 0 (5) — Cassandria Dion struck out 13 Senators batters and gave up just one hit in a complete-game effort in the circle on Friday afternoon in Hadley.
The first six Hopkins batters reached base in the first inning, and five of them scored. Lily Ellia reached base three times including a two-run triple, Dion found her way on board four times and scored three runs and Madalei Gallo singled, walked and ripped a solo home run. The Golden Hawks scored six runs in the fourth inning.
Frontier 15, Mount Greylock 1 — Skyler Steele, Sophia Pinardi and Delaney Fifield all hit home runs for the Redhawks, which cruised to a Franklin County League West victory in Williamstown Friday.
Riley Tine recorded her first career varsity hit, Evva Campbell brought in two with a double while Raine Wonsey struck out 12 and allowed just four hits in the win.
Belchertown 14, Commerce 2 (5) — Commerce scored both of its runs in the top of the first, but the Orioles responded with 14 unanswered to run away with Friday’s contest in Belchertown.
Kina Roy had two hits, two runs and an RBI, Lila Roy ripped a hit and drove in three runs, Valerie Williams scored twice and drove in two and Abby Almeida stuffed the stat sheet with three hits, two RBIs and two runs. Lila Roy struck out six and gave up only four hits in the Os victory.
Lenox 27, Gateway 1 (5) — Tess Hansen and Amy Fisk (RBI) recorded the Gators’ only two hits of the day in a Bi-County League loss to Lenox on the road.
Kate Lewis came around to score in the first inning for Gateway. Lenox scored 10 runs in the first and 13 in the third to run away with Friday’s contest.
Wahconah 13, Granby 9 – Mia Thomas and Brooke Harrington totaled 11 points as the Warriors powered past the Rams on Friday.
Kalli White’s seven points (six goals, assist) led Granby and was followed by Kelly-Lynne Kennedy (goal, two assists) and Ava-Elizabeth Loughman (goal, assist).
Westfield 13, Belchertown 3 — Lia Pikul scored all three goals for the Orioles in a loss to the Bombers on Friday afternoon in Belchertown.
Aubrey McCain added an assist and Natalie Bodon made nine saves in the cage.
Belchertown 16, Wahconah 14 — The Orioles snapped a five-game losing streak behind a monster offensive performance on Friday afternoon in Belchertown.
Patrick Fuller scored six goals for Belchertown, which snapped a nine-game losing streak to Wahconah. The Orioles rallied from a 6-5 halftime deficit, using key goals from Adam O’Rourke and Will Mitus.
Belchertown (3-5) hosts Chicopee Comp on Monday afternoon looking to continue its winning ways.
Granby 3, Ware 0 — The final score may not have reflected it, but the rematch of last year’s Western Massachusetts Class C final was every bit as advertised on Friday. The Rams won 26-24, 25-22, 26-24 to earn a hard-fought sweep over Ware.
Braeden Gallagher put down eight kills, Durant Garden had five kills and Daniel Santiago recorded four to pace Granby’s offense. Nathan Walsh dished out 22 kills in the absence of one of the Rams’ best players and setters, Jake Gagnon. Granby is now 8-2 this spring.
Ludlow 5, Holyoke 0 — The Purple Knights couldn’t manage a point in their 5-0 loss to Ludlow on Friday afternoon.
Holyoke travels to Pope Francis next Wednesday looking for its second win of 2025.
PVCICS 5, Turners Falls 0 — The Dragons made quick work of the Thunder on the road on Friday afternoon, sweeping both singles and doubles play without losing a set.
Lee Ferguson (6-0, 6-0), James Scott (6-2, 6-2) and Carlos Santoyo (6-1, 6-1) were PVCICS’ singles winners, while Teddy Scott and Simon Speek (first doubles, 6-0, 6-0) and Alexander Rachele and James Ferrer (second doubles, 6-0, 6-1) dominated at doubles.
East Longmeadow 4, Amherst 1 — Eli Ferris defeated East Longmeadow’s Declan Dulchinos in a three-set thriller on Friday afternoon, winning 6-1, 2-6, 10-5.
Ferris was the lone ‘Canes winner of the day.
Belchertown 4, Agawam 1 — Make it three wins in a row for the Orioles, bringing their record to 5-4 on the season with a decisive victory over Agawam.
Belchertown next hosts Springfield Central on Wednesday, April 30.
