No. 15 Oregon notched a series win over Maryland by splitting Sunday’s doubleheader.
After the UO bullpen allowed eight runs in two-plus innings in a 12-2 loss in seven innings to open the day, Jason Reitz struck out 11 over 7.0 innings in a 13-3 Ducks win Sunday afternoon at Bob Smith Stadium in College Park.
In the opener, Oregon (24-10, 12-6 Big Ten) took the initial lead on an RBI double by Mason Neville and a fielder’s choice ground out plated another to make it 2-0 in the third.
Maryland (16-21, 4-11) tied it in the bottom of the inning via a ground out and sacrifice fly.
Collin Clarke allowed a walk and three straight singles to open the fifth, the latter two scoring runs, as the Terrapins took a 4-2 lead. Clarke (2-2) allowed four runs on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts over 4.0 IP.
Ryan Featherston walked four of five batters to open the sixth to widen the gap. Alex Calarco hit an RBI single, Jacob Orr followed with a bases-clearing double and Aden Hill singled him in to make it 10-2.
Gabe Howard allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases and B Martin hit a two-run single off Julien Hernandez to invoke the run rule.
Andrew Johnson allowed two runs on three hits, three walks and a hit batter and struck out three over 3.1 IP in a no-decision, Logan Hastings (3-4) allowed two hits, one walk and hit three batters over 3.2 scoreless innings in the win.
Maryland took the early lead in the second game of the day on a two-run single by Hollis Porter in the first.
Oregon tied it in the third as Jacob Walsh singled in Neville and later scored on a walk. Walsh drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth to put UO in front briefly, then Maryland tied it at 3 in the bottom of the frame.
In the fifth, Neville hit a three-run home run and Walsh added a two-run homer to put the Ducks ahead for good.
Drew Smith added an RBI single in the sixth, then Oregon plated four in the ninth via a Maddox Molony RBI double, fielding error, sacrifice fly and Ryan Cooney RBI single.
Maryland used eight different pitchers in the finale, with Devin Milberg (1-2) taking the loss while allowing one run on one hit and three walks in 0.2 IP.
Reitz (1-0) allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and one walk.
Santiago Garcia walked three in 1.0 scoreless inning of relief and Cole Stokes struck out two and walked one in the ninth.
Oregon plays at Georgetown on Monday (8 a.m. PT, CBS Sports Network).
