Athens, Ga – Georgia set out to dictate the tempo of this weekend’s match-up with No. 1 ranked Arkansas on Friday night. The Bulldogs didn’t accomplish that feat as they were bested by the Razorbacks 13-3 at Foley Field.

The Bulldogs moved to 30-6 and 8-5 in the SEC. This was only Georgia’s second loss SEC play at home. The Bulldogs have now lost four games in a row to SEC competition.

Texas swept Georgia last weekend in Austin.

Key moments

Georgia flirted with opportunities all night. The Bulldogs had two men in scoring position with their top leaders in home runs, Ryland Zaborowski and Robbie Burnett coming to the plate with one out. Georgia got nothing.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but they got nothing. These moments allowed Arkansas to chip into the 3-0 lead Georgia had built in the second inning.

The second inning saw Kolby Branch hammer a two-run home run, his third of the week. Branch hit two home runs in Georgia’s 16-2 win over Presbyterian on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs’ first run came on a ground ball by Devin Obee that drove in Christian Adams. That was the extent of Georgia’s offense on Friday. The Bulldogs were only able to collect five hits.

The fourth inning proved to be a problem spot for Georgia starter Brian Curley. He allowed three runs in that inning. The Razorbacks took their first lead of the night in the seventh when a walk turned into a run after a Gabe Fraser triple.

Wehiwa Aloy added another run in the eighth with a long opposite-field home run. He drove in two more in the top of the ninth with a double. Arkansas added two runs in the eighth inning and seven runs in the ninth inning.

Stats of note

Curley pitched five innings, allowed four hits, three runs, and struck out five hitters.

Offensively, Georgia was led by Daniel Jackson, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Branch had a home run, which drove in two runs and scored him a run.

What did Georgia say?

Wes Johnson on missed opportunities: “We had opportunities there, we had runners in second and third. We didn’t get them in. We had bases loaded, and we didn’t get them in. And the difference in games like this, in this league, and no matter if it’s Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, is when you get those opportunities, you have to cash in. They did, and we didn’t, and that’s what happens. That’s going to be the difference in a lot of these games. In every game, if you really go back and look in our league in competitive games, every team has a chance to go one way or the other based on the opportunities they’re given. The teams that take advantage of it and do it, usually go on to win the ballgames. We didn’t do that today. We didn’t.”

Johnson on the long season still ahead: “We’ve got however many (games) left. You know what, you better bounce back. It’s like I tell people all the time, man. Okay, who’s next, ranked wherever and whoever. This is every weekend in our game. We’ll bounce back… We just need to get ready to play tomorrow.”

Game two gets going at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
