MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) - Happy Friday morning, mid-Michigan! We made it to the end of the week and today we celebrate Opening Day! If you’re up with us and getting ready for the day ahead, check these stories to know.

1. U.S. automaker Stellantis announced its temporarily laying off 900 employees at five U.S. facilities after pausing production in some of its plants in Mexico and Canada. It’s affecting the Stellantis Warren and Sterling Heights Stamping Plants. Under the terms of their contract, most of those workers won’t immediately lose pay. Ford is taking a different approach. It’s offering employee pricing to all of its U.S. customers. The initiative goes through June 2.

2. Bay City Commissioners are preparing to determine whether Bay City Bridge Partners (BCBP) breached its contract. The city and the company are named in a class-action lawsuit over tolls collected since January on Independence Bridge. It claims the tolls were collected before all repairs were finished, hence the possible breach of contract. Commissioners will hear legal opinions from the city’s attorney during a closed session meeting on Monday. It starts at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

3. Mark your calendars for a city-wide meeting in Saginaw next week. It’s happening at Saginaw United High School in their auditorium. The meeting will discuss an update to the zoning ordinance. The city is inviting you to share your thoughts, ideas and concerns. The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. on April 9.

4. Central Michigan University (CMU) is holding an investiture ceremony for the university’s 16th president, Neil MacKinnon. He’ll give a speech describing the power of higher education and it’s impact on people and the community. MacKinnon will also share his thoughts on transformation and innovation at CMU and his ideas for the future. The ceremony will be at Warriner Hall’s auditorium, starting at 10 a.m.

5. Baseball season is back and today’s Opening Day! The Detroit Tigers are home at Comerica Park to take on the Chicago White Sox at 1:10 p.m. TV5 will have live coverage later today.

Midland’s Great Lakes Loons also play today. Their season opener is against the Lake County Captains, the game is tonight at 6:05 p.m. TV5 is proud to announce a broadcast agreement that will air 15 games during the 2025 season on WNEM TV-5 and WNEM+. You can now enjoy coverage just about anywhere. The first games to air will be the Loons Opening Weekend series April 4 to April 6 on WNEM+. The first game to air on primary WNEM TV-5 will be Sunday, April 20 against the Dayton Dragons.
