WMU Baseball 2025 - Chris Akers

Western Michigan baseball fell 3-0 in its weekend series against Miami (OH). The Broncos fell in game one 11-5. WMU lost both games of Saturday’s double header 13-1 and 12-2. The team is now 4-8 in the Mid-American Conference and 6-19 overall.  

Chris Akers and Lucas Rick were standout players offensively for the Broncos, scoring the majority of WMU’s runs for the weekend. The Broncos struggled on the mound, throwing in 11 pitchers across three games. 

Game 1 

The Broncos kicked off the scoring in the 3rd inning with an RBI from Akers, bringing in Rick. The team kept the momentum into the 4th inning, scoring off an RBI from Connor Ostrander. Rick then hit a two-run homer, bringing the Broncos’ score to four. 

Ty McKinstry got the start on the mound for the Broncos. He gave up six runs in 5.0 innings. After switching pitchers in the bottom of the sixth, WMU was unable to hold Miami, with the RedHawks scoring five more runs and holding the Broncos to just five. 

Game 2 

In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Joey Wizceb got the start on the mound. He gave up five runs in 3.2 innings. Joe Shapiro was brought in during the 4th inning, giving up seven runs in 1.1 innings. 

The Broncos sole run in this game was an RBI from Rick, bringing in Grady Mee. By the 7th inning, the run rule was enacted, with Miami being up over 10 runs. 

Game 3 

In the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday, Reese Gaber was given the start on the mound. He pitched just 2.0 innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits. Miami had a score of nine at the end of the 3rd inning, not scoring again until the 6th. The RedHawks then ran the score up to 12 and implemented the run rule, ending the game after 6.5 innings.  

The Broncos had just two runs, with RBIs coming from Avery Thielman and Akers. Both runs were scored in the 2nd inning.  

The Broncos will stay on the road as it takes on Notre Dame next. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on April 1.
