Wofford baseball team drops series finale to The Citadel
The Citadel Bulldogs scored in the first inning and held the Wofford baseball team to just a run Sunday afternoon despite the Terriers’ best comeback efforts as the Bulldogs claimed a 7-1 win at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. Wofford falls to 20-9 (2-1 SoCon) as The Citadel improves to 15-14 (3-3 SoCon).
Wofford used a trio of pitchers in the contest with Carter Rasmussen (2-1) suffering the loss in his first start as a Terrier, allowing just one unearned run in 1.2 innings of work. He struck out one with no walks. Kenny Michaels followed with 2.2 frames out of the bullpen, and Alec Bouchard hurled the final 3.2 innings.
Chandler Anderson (1-0) earned the win for The Citadel, throwing 6.0 innings with just one run surrendered as the starter. Maddox Webb (1) picked up the save for the Bulldogs, pitching the final 3.0 frames with no runs allowed.
Wofford was outhit 10-6 with Tanner Hardin’s two knocks leading the team. Ryan Wynn, James Layman, Andrew Mannelly, and Niko Brini each picked up one hit. Brini recorded the lone Terrier RBI. Mannelly reached base three times with a pair of walks, and Layman added one.
The Citadel struck first in the bottom of the first. A hit batter led off the inning, and he would later score on an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 edge.
Pitching continued to be in control on both sides with the next two frames going by quietly. The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth, however, with an RBI double. This extended The Citadel’s lead to 2-0.
Wofford got onto the board in the top of the fifth. James Layman walked, and back-to-back singles by Andrew Mannelly and Tanner Hardin loaded the bases. Niko Brini’s single the other way into shallow left pushed across a run, bringing Wofford within 2-1.
The Citadel got that run back in the bottom of the fifth when a wild pitch plated a Bulldog, making the margin 3-1.
After a scoreless sixth inning, The Citadel added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh, stretching its lead to 6-1.
The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single, pushing their lead to 7-1.
Down to their final chance in the top of the ninth, the Terriers continued to battle with a Layman lead-off single. After a strikeout, Hardin singled to put two on. However, another strikeout and a flyout would finish off the contest with The Citadel salvaging a game in the series, 7-1.
Wofford returns to Spartanburg on Tuesday, April 1, to play crosstown foe USC Upstate. The game will take place downtown in Fifth Third Park, the new home of the High-A Hub City Spartanburgers. This will be the first-ever baseball game in Fifth Third Park with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
