High School Roundup: Liberty Union softball is off to a fast start, improving to 4-0

SOFTBALL

Liberty Union takes two: The Lions improved to 4-0 after sweeping Coshocton, 13-0 and 14-1.

In the first game, Eden Wilson and Suzie Shultz combined for a no-hitter. Wilson pitched the first four innings and finished with nine strikeouts and Shultz pitched one inning and struck out two. Shultz also hit a grand slam. Headen Brunty went 3 for 3 and scored three runs, while Wilson, Ryleigh Brown added two hits each.

In the second game, Emmalee Putnam and Brown shared the pitching duties and combined to give up four hits, no earned runs and eight strikeouts. Brunty finished with three hits, while Shultz, Putnam, Addi Osterman, and Masie Buzkirk added two hits each.

In an 8-4 nonconference win over Centerburg, the Lions pounded out 13 hits, led by Shultz, who went 3 for 4. Osterman had two hits, Brown had a double and two RBIs, and Putnam had a double and two RBIs. Shultz picked up the win as she pitched four innings, giving up four runs on five hits and finished with nine strikeouts. Wilson pitched three perfect innings and had six strikeouts.

Millersport 13, Bexley 7: The Lakers scored eight runs in the second inning to spark their nonconference win over the Lions.

Ginny Worstall singled, scoring two runs, Kira Squires singled, scoring one run, Ava Blevins doubled, scoring one run, Emma Raver doubled, scoring two runs, Kendyl Bonkowski singled, scoring one run, and Scarlet Sheets grounded out, scoring one run.

The Lakers added five runs on six hits in the third inning. Squires singled, scoring one run, Blevins tripled, scoring two runs, Sheets singled, scoring one run, and Worstall singled, scoring one run.

Blevins earned the win, giving up three hits and four runs (three earned) over four and one-third innings, striking out three and walking five. Bonkowski appeared in relief and finished with five strikeouts.

Hartley 13, Millersport 2: The Lakers (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season against the Hawks.

Kendyl Bonkowski took the loss. In seven innings of work, she surrendered four earned runs on eight hits, striking out seven and walking one.

Scarlet Sheets and Bonkowski were a one-two punch in the lineup, as each drove in one run, and Emma Raver, Claire Haney, and Sheets each collected one hit.

Berne Union 15, Zanesville 3: The Rockets pounded out 12 hits in their nonconference win over the Blue Devils.

Karlee Morgan went 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs to lead the offense. Rylee North had two hits, including a double and triple and scored two runs, Mackenzie Fritz and Lauryn Kuhn added two hits and Kori Hoplite had a double and two RBIs. Reese Besco picked up her first varsity win, giving up three earned runs on six hits and finishing with six strikeouts.

BASEBALL

Fairfield Union takes two from Logan: Led by senior Micha Harmon, the Falcons picked up a pair of nonconference wins over Logan, defeating the Chieftains 9-8 and 13-3.

Hartman went 3 for 5, including a home run and three RBIs in the first game. Jacob Forson had two hits, including a double and a home run and Ben Barringer had two doubles and two RBIs. Brady Andrews picked up the win.

In the second game, Hartman went 3 for 3, including two doubles and five RBIs. Dylan Chilcote had three hits and Barringer added two hits and two RBIs. Chilcote picked up the win, giving up three hits in four innings and had six strikeouts.

Bloom-Carroll sweeps DH: The Bulldogs opened the season with a pair of nonconference wins by defeating Chardon 6-0 and Hartley 2-0.

Markus Roberson picked up the win in the first game. He pitched five innings, giving up four hits and striking out seven. Caleb Hinkel was the winner in Game 2 as gave up three hits and struck out four. Ethan Moore led the offense by going 4 for 6 and four RBIs on the day.

Amanda-Clearcreek 8, Bexley 7: The Aces scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a nonconference win over the Lions.

Cole Schiff led the Aces as he went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, Breece Stone went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Brody Elder had two hits, and Gary Kimmerling had a hit and two RBIs.
