MILLER CITY — Edgerton’s baseball team was outscored 23-10 by Miller City in a nonconference doubleheader, losing 13-5 in the first game and 10-5 in the second, to start its season on Saturday in Miller City.
The Bulldogs (0-2) used a four-run top of the third inning in the first game to take a 5-1 lead. But the Wildcats (2-0) answered with a five-run bottom of the third to swing momentum their way for a 13-5 victory.
In the second game, Edgerton trailed 5-2 through four innings before a Kellen Sanchez RBI single in the fifth, and RBI hits from Bryce Schroeder (double) and Braden Leppelmeier (single) in the sixth, tied the game at 5-5.
But like the first contest, Miller City swiftly responded. The Wildcats put up a five-run bottom of the sixth to secure a 10-5 win and the sweep.
Maddox Baker had a double and single in the first game with a run while Noah Weaver smacked a two-run triple while touching home once. Starting pitcher Scottie Krontz added two runs, a single and RBI while Sanchez (double) and Mason Elden (single) each tallied a hit and RBI.
Krontz suffered the loss after two innings. He fanned five batters while allowing four hits, six earned runs and five walks.
Sanchez fronted the Bulldogs’ offense in the second contest by smacking three singles with an RBI. He also suffered the loss after three relief innings, allowing four hits, five earned runs and four walks with no strikeouts.
Parker Elden tossed the first three innings for Edgerton. He fired four strikeouts while allowing six hits, five runs (three earned) and zero walks.
Jackson Flower contributed two RBIs, a double and run while Schroeder doubled with an RBI and run. Leppelmeier (RBI) and Baker (run) each singled as well.
Andrew Weis totaled five RBIs with a double, single and run in the first game for Miller City while starting pitcher Brayden Niese had three runs, two singles and an RBI. Jonathon Pester added three runs, two RBIs and a single and Brendan Barlage contributed two runs, two RBIs and two hits (double, single).
Pester earned the win after going 4 2/3 innings of relief. He fired seven strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one walk.
Miller City’s Max Long totaled three hits (two singles, one double) with two RBIs and one run in the second game while Barlage chipped in two RBIs and two runs with a home run. Pester also scored twice with a double.
Jack Wenzinger (run, single, RBI) earned the relief win after throwing two frames. He allowed three hits, two earned runs, one hit batter and zero walks with one strikeout.
Edgerton will try to bounce back when it visits nonconference foe Archbold on Monday.
