SOFTBALL
South El Monte 12, El Monte 0 (5 innings)
Eagles outfielder Jazmine Leyva continues to torch opposing pitchers, leading the Eagles (8-6, 1-0) to victory in their Mission Valley League opener by going 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
The UCLA commit belted two home runs, including a two-run homer, to raise her home run total to five this season.
South El Monte senior pitcher Nadine Gutierrez was also solid, throwing a five-inning shortened shutout while allowing just one hit. Elise Gonzalez also provided a spark with three hits and two runs scored.
But what Leyva continues to do is special.
Leyva is batting .704 with 15 RBIs and seven doubles, and has been a dominant force since her freshman season. She had 12 home runs and 44 RBIs her junior season, and has 31 home runs over her four-year career.
Leyva also has 55 career doubles, and is one shy of the CIF Southern Section record of 56 set by University Prep’s Justice Borden, who belted 56 doubles from 2013-16.
California 13, Santa Fe 0 (5 innings)
The Condors (8-5, 3-0) won their Del Rio League opener by blowing the game open with nine runs in the fifth inning.
Mia Martinez led the Condors with three doubles and an RBI. Shirley Acevedo had a two-run home run and three RBIs.
Condors pitcher Pricilla Ramirez threw a complete game, allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts.
Monrovia 16, San Marino 5 (6 innings)
The Wildcats (4-9, 1-2) scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to earn their first Rio Hondo League victory.
Sophomore Mischa Lue-Long was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Madison Cardona belted a two-run homer.
Wildcats pitcher Leilanni Ortega went all six innings and allowed nine hits.
BASEBALL
San Dimas 9, Los Altos 1
Saints freshman pitcher Dean Brosterhouse threw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts to help his team improve to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the Valle Vista League.
Jason Almeda had a bases-clearing double and finished with four RBIs, and Vaughn Coleman was 2 for 3 with three runs scored. Senior Ashton Romero belted a solo home run.
Cathedral Catholic 8, Maranatha 1
The Minutemen dropped their second consecutive game in the Boras Classic. They fell behind 5-0 in the third inning at JSerra High.
The Minutemen lost their third straight overall, dropping their record to 2-6-1.
Lukus Perez was 2 for 3 with a double and Trevor Rivas drove in the Minutemens’ only run.
Alemany 4, St. Francis 1
The Warriors broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the seventh inning to pull out the victory. They improved to 6-7 and 2-5 in the Mission League.
Jonathan Alvarez’s triple brought in the go-ahead run, 2-1, and the Warriors added two more runs in the inning.
The Golden Knights, who managed just two hits, dropped to 6-8 and 1-6 with their sixth straight loss.
