Amateur baseball roundup: Plankinton Bankers blank Plankinton Gold Sox behind Travis Gant's 19 strikeouts, Sheldon Gant's two home runs

Travis Gant struck out 19 batters and Sheldon Gant belted two home runs to power the Plankinton Bankers to a 2-0 Pony Hills League amateur baseball win over the Plankinton Gold Sox on Thursday.

PLANKINTON -- Travis Gant struck out 19 batters and Sheldon Gant belted two home runs to power the Plankinton Bankers to a 2-0 Pony Hills League amateur baseball win over the Plankinton Gold Sox on Thursday.

Gant allowed five hits through 109 pitches in his complete-game performance. Gant smacked solo homers in the sixth and eighth innings for the game’s lone runs, which both came with two outs. Chris Hill added two hits for the Bankers.

Gold Sox pitcher Devin Mehlhaff threw five scoreless innings before Gant’s first home run. He took the loss after allowing four hits, two earned runs and eight strikeouts through 115 pitches.

Tye Harris finished with three hits, while Jesse Grosdidier and Tom Harris each had a hit for the Gold Sox.

The Bankers (7-0 Pony Hills) play at Chamberlain on Friday. The Gold Sox host Miller/Wessington on Sunday.

Platte 5, Mount Vernon 4

MOUNT VERNON -- Platte plated all five runs in the seventh inning and edged Mount Vernon in Sunshine League amateur baseball action on Thursday.

Richard Sternberg and Michael Buitenbos had two hits apiece for the Killer Tomatoes. Hunter Hewitt, Grant Lang, Hayden Kuiper and Ryan Allen each had a hit.

Miles Huber earned the win after logging four strikeouts, allowing five hits and three earned runs in seven innings. Lang struck out four batters in two relief innings.

For Mount Vernon, Spencer Neugebauer had two of the team’s six hits. Bradley Dean, Eric Giblin, Deric Denning and Cameron Deinert each had a hit. Giblin took the loss after starting the first six innings, finishing with six strikeouts, two earned runs and allowed four hits.

Platte (4-2) plays Winner/Colome on Sunday in Winner. Mount Vernon (8-2) hosts Corsica-Stickney on Sunday.

Alexandria 15, Dimock/Emery 0 (5 innings)

ALEXANDRIA -- Alexandria crushed five home runs and coasted to a Sunshine League amateur baseball win over Dimock/Emery on Thursday.

Pierce Smith and Cole Wenande smacked two home runs apiece, while Adam Durfee added a home run. Wenande drove in four runs. Smith, Wenande, Jed Schmidt, Pierce Smith and Jerrod Zens had two hits apiece. Durfee, Tyson Gau, Jordan Gau and Michael Schoettmer each had a hit for Alexandria, which had 14 total in the game.

Schmidt earned the win after striking out six batters and allowing one hit in four innings.

Sam Arend had Dimock/Emery’s lone hit. Drew Kitchens took the loss after giving up eight hits, 11 runs (seven earned) and struck out one batter in 2 1/3 innings.

Alexandria (8-1) plays at Parkston on Sunday. Dimock/Emery (6-4) plays at Mount Vernon on June 24.

Winner/Colome 14, Parkston 2 (8 innings)

PARKSTON -- Winner/Colome racked up 16 hits and J.J. Farner struck out seven batters in a Sunshine League amateur baseball win over Parkston on Thursday.

Chandler Bakley finished with four hits, while Oscar Pravecek had three hits. Derek Graesser, Zach Harter and Lakin Neugebauer had two hits apiece. Austin Calhoon crushed a three-run homer in the eighth inning, while Brendan Kamerzell and Reed Harter each had a hit.

Farner allowed six hits, two runs and issued two walks through 118 pitches.

For Parkston, Dan Bonte, Matt Malloy, Billy Hamilton, Nate Doering, Nathan Boettcher and Jordon McKean each had a hit. Doering took the loss after allowing four earned runs, five hits and logging two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings.

Winner/Colome (6-3) hosts Platte on Sunday. Parkston (3-10) hosts Alexandria on Sunday.

Canova 15, Dell Rapids PBR 3 (7 innings)

DELL RAPIDS -- Canova collected 16 hits and picked up a Cornbelt League amateur baseball win over Dell Rapids PBR on Thursday.

Justin Miller led Canova with four hits and three RBIs. Trey Krier, Garrett Gassman, Jason Miller, Cole Gassman and Tim Gassman had two hits apiece. Derek Miller and Kendall Gassman each had a hit. Krier started the first five innings and allowed one earned run, five hits and struck out one batter.

PBR’s Carter Gullickson had two hits. Tanner Solberg allowed 12 hits, 11 runs (seven earned) and struck out two batters through five innings in the loss.

Canova (10-1) hosts Salem on Sunday in Cornbelt League action.

Kimball/White Lake 8, Miller/Wessington 3

KIMBALL -- Kimball/White Lake jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and knocked off Miller/Wessington in Pony Hills League amateur baseball action on Thursday.

Brian Zeman, Dylanger Pierson and Zak Wallner had two hits apiece. Caden Lenz and Trent Wookey each had a hit. Lenz and Zeman each had a hit. Zeman struck out six batters, allowed seven hits and two earned runs through the first six innings to earn the win.

For Miller/Wessington, Jay Winter and Ryan Engle had two hits apiece. Ryan Soler, Juan Sabalier, Rafael Clemente, Kyle Johnson and James White each had a hit. Johnson took the loss after giving up six hits, eight runs (two earned) and struck out five batters in five innings.

Colome 19, South Central 5 (7 innings)

COLOME -- Jake Luse finished with four of Colome’s 19 hits in a Pony Hills League amateur baseball win over South Central on Thursday.

Luse drove in three runs. Jackson Kinzer, Ben Connot and Jeff Ohlmann had three hits and two RBIs apiece. Dalton Baker collected two hits, while Terrance Kinzer, Sid Bice, Carter Brickman and Ethan Vobr each had a hit. Shea Connot struck out five batters, allowed seven hits and three earned runs in seven innings to pick up the win.

South Central’s Aaron Sundquist had two hits. Jaden Frank, Christian Schweigert, Paul Taggart, Jayd VanDerWerff and Cole Christopherson each had a hit. Paul Taggart was tagged with the loss after giving up eight hits, eight runs (seven earned) and struck out two batters in one inning.

Colome (3-5) hosts Miller/Wessington on Saturday. South Central hosts Kimball/White Lake on Sunday.

Lesterville 10, Tabor 7 (11 innings)

TABOR -- In the 11th inning, Ethan Wishon’s bases-clearing triple lifted Lesterville to a South Central League amateur baseball win over Tabor on Thursday.

Wishon, Tanner VanDriel, Andy Dollarschell and Trent Herrboldt had two hits apiece. Hunter Martin belted a homer. Michael Drotzmann struck out five batters, allowed nine hits and seven runs (six earned) in the first eight innings.

For Tabor, Bryce Scieszinski had a three-run homer. Joey Slama finished 4 of 5, while Austin White had two hits. Hunter Hallock, Beau Rothschadl and Sam Caba each had a hit. Logan Tycz allowed eight hits, six runs (four earned) and struck out one batter in five innings.
