Blaise Magana was 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs as the St. Francis High baseball team blew past host Scotts Valley 15-2 in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League game Friday.
Winning pitcher Chase Watkins struck out 11 batters, giving up two hits and no walks in six scoreless innings.
Connor Schelstraete took the loss.
Watkins, headed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo next season, also shined at the plate. He was 3 for 3 with two intentional walks, an RBI and run. Derric Estrada-Haro scored twice and hit a three-run triple, and Felipe Padia-Noriega was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs.
St. Francis (4-2, 2-1) hosts Pacific Grove on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The Falcons’ Masachika Sato and David Nicholson scored in the seventh.
Joe Murray, Bryce Clark, Bryce Gundersen and Carson Spence also had hits for the Falcons (2-5, 1-2), who host Evergreen Valley on April 7 at noon.
Santa Cruz 10, at San Lorenzo Valley 1 >> Ricky Parra shut down the Cougars for five innings and the Cardinals won their SCCAL game. Parra gave up one run while walking three and striking out two.
Adrian Flores was 2 for 3 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs, and Javier Felix was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run. Kinsal Plunkett, GJ Hill and Uri Hernandez also had hits.
Trent Walker took the loss for SLV (3-6, 0-3). Justin Rudrow scored the Cougars’ lone run.
The state-ranked Cardinals (7-1, 5-0) face College Park (3-3) of Pleasant Hill in Saint Francis’ Elite 8 Tournament on Tuesday in Mountain View at 1 p.m. College Park was a North Coast Section Division I semifinalist last season.
At Soquel 10, Harbor 4 >> Ryan Murtha was 3 for 4 — a single, double and triple — with two RBIs and two runs as the Knights won their SCCAL game.
Soquel (3-6, 1-1) finished with 18 hits, including five for extra bases.
Jackson Dudek was 2 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and a run, winning pitcher Nate Werdmuller was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs, and Keagan Vasconcellos was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Werdmuller gave up seven hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings while striking out five. Jacob Shipley took the loss.
Brendan Bobo was 2 for 4 to lead Harbor (4-7, 1-4).
Soquel plays Wood Cross (Utah) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Century High in Santa Ana to open the Santa Ana Elks/Century Baseball Classic.
Pro baseball
Carle takes loss in relief >> Reliever Shane Carle, a Scotts Valley High and Cabrillo College alum, took the loss as the host Atlanta Braves fell 5-4 to Philadelphia in 11 innings.
Carle gave up a run on two hits in two innings of work. He had one strikeout.
Boys volleyball
At Soquel 3, SLV 0 >> The Knights earned a 25-22, 25-20, 25-16 sweep in SCCAL play.
Luka Mahkovtz led SLV with 11 kills and two aces, Logan Prelgovisk added two kills, one block and four digs and Jordan Kay added four digs.
SLV hosts Scotts Valley on April 11 at 6:30 p.m.
Beach volleyball
Cabrillo 5, at West Valley 0 >> The No. 1 team Mari Molina and Alex Bol and No. 5 team Jolie Samuelson and Lina Fiso earned three-set wins to help Cabrillo remain unbeaten in conference play.
Hayley Hall and Deirdre Wilson, Paige Schieferstein and Kylie Kvam, and Kendra Lis and Alena Fernandez earned sweeps for the Seahawks (7-1).
Cabrillo 5, San Mateo 0 >> The Seahawks rolled past the shorthanded Bulldogs at West Valley in Saratoga.
Hayley Hall and Deirdre Wilson, Paige Schieferstein and Kylie Kvam, and Alena Fernandez and Kendra Lis all earned straight-set wins.
Surfing
Young eliminated >> Santa Cruz’s Nat Young was eliminated in Round 4 of the World Surf League’s Barbados Surf Pro, a Men’s QS 3,000 event at Drill Hall Beach in Barbados.
Young posted a two-wave score of 9.40 to finish behind Hawaii’s Tanner Hendrickson (13.27) and Benji Brand (11.73) and ahead of Morocco’s Ramzi Boukhiam (7.23).
Men’s tennis
At Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6, UC Santa Cruz 3 >> Chad Le Duff won 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Chad Stone won 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at No. 3, but the No. 34 ranked Slugs dropped their match to No. 6 C-M-S.
The Slugs (3-7) host Chabot on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Women’s tennis
At Redlands 7, UCSC 2 >> The Slugs dropped their road match to fall to 2-7.
UCSC hosts Dominican on April 7. The time is TBA.

S.F. State Distance Carnival >> UCSC sophomore Siena Benavides took third in the long jump (17 feet, 10.75 inches) on the opening day of the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
Slugs freshman Abby McPhillips tied for eighth in the high jump (5-0.25) and sophomore Isabella Chiaravalloti, junior Natalie Marquardt, and freshman Clare Ahearn tied for eighth in the pole vault (9-6.25).
UCSC junior Sydney Gutierrez took 58th in the 1,500 (4:44.47).
Men’s track and field
S.F. State Distance Carnival >> UCSC freshman Mason Pierce took fourth in the pole vault (14-9) on the opening day of the San Francisco State Distance Carnival.
Slugs senior Davis Kepon tied for fourth in the high jump (6-0.50) and placed 27th in the long jump (19-05.50).
UCSC sophomore Tyler Rule took 43rd in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:42.87) and sophomore Draven Hawk took 97th in the 1,500 (4:10.17).
High school track and field
MTAL >> PCS beat Greenfield 39-24 and lost to King City 99-28 at a Mission Trail Athletic League cluster meet at Carmel High on Thursday.
The Pumas’ Roxana Ortiz won the 800 in 2:39.80, Berit Friedenbach won the pole vault (9-0) and Sofia Ferrer took third in the 3,200 (13:36.99).
PCS’s boys lost to Greenfield 57-23 and King City 126-2.
