A 50-year-old British man has been battered to death with a metal bar in Brazil while sleeping rough on the streets.

Brazilian police say that Michael Steer Renshaw - who had been in the country for around a decade and apparently fell on hard times after getting divorced - was allegedly murdered by another homeless man.

CCTV video footage they released shows a man armed with a metal bar walking towards a parking lot where two bodies were later found - and moments later ditching the pole as he fled.

Police said one of the bodies was that of Mr Renshaw - who was originally born in England and settled in Brazil after marrying a local woman with whom he had an eight-year-old daughter.

They added that he began living on the streets of Sao Paulo in southeast Brazil after becoming an alcoholic.

Mr Renshaw is reported to have been sleeping with two other homeless 'street dwellers' in the Santo Andre region of the city when they were inexplicably attacked at around 6pm on Sunday afternoon.

Local media report that there had been a disagreement with the No.1 suspect in the case around 10 days earlier.

Police have released CCTV footage of a suspect they wish to question - carrying a metal bar through nearby streets to the murder.

They said that they believe the man is another so-called 'street dweller' - not that uncommon in Brazil - who knew the victims but whose own name is reportedly unknown .

The CCTV published in local media shows the man - wearing blue hat, red body-warmer, jeans and white trainers - arriving at the health clinic car park where they three victims were sleeping with the yellow pole over his shoulder.

Seconds later, he is seen re-emerging out onto the street - and casually tossing the murder weapon away before calming walking off.

Moments later, a passer-by dressed in a blue tracksuit and white baseball cap, comes across the gruesome scene and calls for help.

As well as Mr Renshaw, a Brazilian man called Fabio Netto de Neves, 48 - believed to have been a lawyer - was also killed in the attack.

A third victim managed to escape and can be seen on the CCTV footage in a hite T-shirt running away from the scene. His whereabouts is not clear.

Police investigator Edson Barbosa said both dead victims were known alcoholics but that "they were held very dear by local residents and shopkeepers".

He added: "They didn't cause any problems. We are investigating what might have motivated this crime."

"Talking with other street dwellers and shopkeepers, we found that the man who attacked the two victims presents almost hermit-like behaviour.

"He never talked to anyone and was also aggressive. So it is difficult for people to even know his name."

He said Mr Renshaw had been arrested in 2009 for stealing food from a supermarket, but that he was living legally in Brazil after marrying a Brazilian.

Police say they are trying to track down Mr Renshaw's ex-wife in order to release his body.

Local media reports that the British consulate is trying to assist them.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman told MirrorOnline: “We are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Santo André, and are in contact with the Brazilian police.”
