Baseball Fiji Plans for Future
Baseball Fiji has a plan for the future.
It is based on nurturing young players in Fiji to one day be good enough for international competition.
At a clinic for Under-12 and Under-15 players yesterday, Baseball Fiji president Takao Mochida said he saw immense potential in Fiji for baseball to thrive.
“As we all know, Fiji is a country dominated by rugby,” Mochida said.
“We want to bring in top coaches into Fiji to develop the skills of our players.”
Mochida hopes the current crop of players will be ready for the senior team in 5-10 years.
The clinic was organised with assistance from the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) and the Tokyo Giants academy.
The Tokyo Giants is a leading big league baseball team in Japan.
It included a friendly match between the Fijians and a team from the Japanese community in Fiji.
Mochida, who has been involved with Baseball Fiji since 2007, believes the sport has a lot to offer not just to Fiji but to the entire Pacific region.
“I think Fiji can produce some top quality baseball players,” he said.
“In 10 to 15 years time, I believe Fiji can be feeding top players to teams in USA and Japan.
“I would like all the people of Fiji to know that although baseball is a small sport, it has the potential to become big.”
